Graduation season has come and gone. Let’s reminisce with some of BLOC’s favorite commencement speeches.
1. Michelle Obama
Michelle is first on our list not only because she’s FLOTUS, but because she kept it 100 about her struggles with racism on the road to the White House and while there. Chelly delivers an important message to grads of Tuskegee, reminding them of the burden we bear as Black people, but also of the communal power we have if we leverage it correctly.
Puff Daddy/Puffy/P Diddy/Diddy/Sean Combs’ speech is one of the most entertaining speeches on this list! Whether he’s quoting Biggie lyrics, talking about his two years at Howard, or his experiences running the New York marathon, Diddy will spend the next 37 minutes of this video cracking you up while giving you some of the best advice you’ve ever gotten from a graduation speech.
I mean...she’s Oprah. All she GOT is motivation and dope life advice! So go ahead. Press play. Get yo life.
4. Cornel West
Cornel West just makes us want to be better people. This is such a great speech to watch as a black millennial. Dr. West reminds us of the importance of loving one another and being a servant to our community. In the midst of the #BlackLivesMatter movement this is a great speech to listen to, as we as a community think about navigating racial injustice as black collegians.
5. Kerry Washington
The woman who has our twitter timeline LIT every Thursday night, reminds us in her commencement address that the dopest things come from stepping out of our comfort zones. Listen as Ms. Washington reveals how taking a role as a frog in a college production led her to ultimately become the gladiator we know and love.
6. Denzel Washington
In his commencement address, Uncle Denzel reminds us of the importance of setting goals. He tells graduates in his speech, “I try to give myself a goal every day, sometime it’s just not to curse somebody put.” We’ll drink to that!
