Each week, we will be bringing you quick insights from young professionals and scholars who are making moves and care about helping you level up. Mariah is a native of Dayton, OH, current Senior at Wright State University set to graduate fall of 2016.
BLOC: We heard you just recently helped start a really cool media company, can you tell us more about it?
It's called P.L.U.HF Media which stands for Peace, Love, Unity and Having Fun. These are the four elements of the Zulu nation that heavily influenced hip hop. We incorporate these elements through the services we provide which is Photography, Videography, Music production, and Fashion. I am co-founder (producer/editor) along with my bestfriend Brooke Neal (photographer/videographer), Erin Evans being our Creative Director and our manager of Matriarch Management, Brittney Neal. Pretty much I make music and I'm getting ready to get a radio show on WWSU 106.9 on campus.
BLOC: What inspired your team to use those elements?
We decided to use these specific elements because in a way we want to rebirth a culture that we feel has been lost and forgotten. We just want our business to be fun, vibrant, and full of good vibes.
BLOC: If you had to choose, which is your favorite element? And why?
Love because I really love...love. I think that without it, humanity would fail to exist. I know I just got deep but that's how serious it is! It's also my favorite because it involves so many euphoric feelings.
BLOC: What can we expect from PLUHF Media in 2016?
Well on January 30th we are hosting an event that implements our third element, Unity. We are inviting local businesses, artist, performers, and people who just love to have fun to the Dayton Collaboratory in Downtown Dayton, Ohio. We're collaborating with the delicious food of StrEat Cred which is a company started by my best friend. We want to make it an annual thing so probably 3 times a year we'll be hosting an Urban Picnic of some sort. Hopefully by the end of next year we have built up clientele and be expecting a lot of collaborations.
BLOC: How will PLUHF Media meet the needs of the students, artists, and creatives in your community?
For students, exposure. When we experiment with things such as photography, we'll ask students at Wright State to be our models who we know are interested in that line of work. For artist and creatives, connections, a platform, and support. We are big on unity and working with others because we see the new opportunities that could arise from these collaboration. We also know that for some people, they don't have access to an outlet for their talent, so anyone is always welcome to work with us.
BLOC: Do you have any advice for emerging students about starting something of their own?
Prioritize, plan, pray, & put forth your all. Prioritizing and having time management is so important, especially juggling classes and a job. Writing down a plan of any and all ideas that come to mind is also important. Lastly, it won't be successful unless you are giving it all you got, so the passion that you have, use it. Also, let God be your engine.
BLOC: What album / artists have gotten you through college so far?
Kanye's 808 & Heartbreaks, of course. SZA and any song she is featured on (She means the world to me). Erykah Badu, Erykah Badu, & more Erykah Badu. Chance The Rapper's Acid Rap is a favorite go to of mine, and the mellow sounds of James Blake & Sampha. I really could go on...
BLOC: What is the most important lesson you've learned outside of the classroom in college?
Look at your mistakes as lessons. Never beat yourself up because I've made the MOST mistakes ever while being in college and have become the better me because of them.
BLOC: What are you currently reading?
Erich Fromm's "The Art of Loving" . He's a German psychologist who's pretty dope in my opinion.
BLOC: What's a hashtag that would describe your personality?
I got two: #BlackLivesMatter and #BlackGyallMagic.
BLOC: What black businesses are you spending your dollars at this holiday season?
Definitely GlossRags and possibly Black Owned.
