Each week, we will be bringing you quick insights from young professionals and scholars who are making moves and care about helping you level up. Savanna is a native of Cleveland, OH, current Junior at Kent State University set to graduate in 2017.
BLOC: What transferrable skills have you gained from being involved on campus?
What and where true networking can get and/or take you in life. It’s not enough to just get a card, but knowing how to properly use it to build a relationship that can benefit you in the future. Also knowing when and how to show emotion. Not everyone needs to see you at your most vulnerable, not everyone has earned the privilege of seeing you at a low. That is reserved for those who have earned your trust. Many will take emotion as weakness and the only person you owe any kind of explanation to is yourself and God.
BLOC: How do you plan to unwind during holiday break? What goals do you want to focus on during break?
I’m going to try my best to just relax and not be bothered. Maybe a spa day. Definitely need a mani-pedi, but between two big holiday trips for Christmas and New Year we’ll see how much relaxing actually gets done.
I want to finish half of my internship applications, my law school consideration list, and 2016 goals list.
BLOC: What album / artists have gotten you through your first years in college?
Johnathan McReynolds, Mali Music, Ashley DuBose, J. Cole and Kendrick, and just about anything from the Erykah and Arie 90’s era. Typical 90’s kid, what can I say?
BLOC: What is the most important lesson you've learned outside of the classroom?
Relationships can be your biggest support system and your quickest demise.
BLOC: Self-care is important. What are you currently doing to take care of your mental health and personal needs?
Keeping an organized calendar complete with sticky notes and remembering that one 1-3 mistakes won’t kill you, 4-5 might.
BLOC: What are you currently reading?
The little black book of success: Laws of Leadership for Black Women by Elaine Meryl Brown, Marsha Haygood, and Rhonda McLean
BLOC: What is a quote that inspires you?
"Success isn't about how much money you make; it's about the difference you make in people's lives."
— Michelle Obama
BLOC: Is there a hashtag that describes your personality?
BLOC: What black businesses are you spending your dollars at this holiday season?
Black&SexyTV and Hypekreationz “Queen”
BLOC: As the BLOC, our mission is to empower black collegians to achieve, connect and engage. We are really focused on enabling students to enact powerful change on their campuses and to bring the activist spirit and ethic into their given industry. How do you maintain your social consciousness / awareness while still staying focused on your studies?
By being aware of what’s going on in the world and how it impacts the black community. I try my best to make sure that my actions are in line with what I say and believe. I don’t back down from my opinions on controversial issues anymore, and no longer allow others to say ignorant things without being confronted. Forcing others who aren’t black to deal with their inner feelings about racial issues and situations forces me to continuously reevaluate my own thoughts and that’s where I believe true change has to happen before I can change the world
