BY RYAN STALEY Why self care?
As Black males, self care is one of the most important things we can focus on to help us with our day-to-day health, stresses, responsibilities, self awareness, and critical thinking abilities. Practicing good self care keeps your mental and physical health in shape and allows you to reach higher levels of creativity and strength to show off your natural talents. Here are 5 ways you can begin investing in yourself as a young king: 1. Talk about it to be about it. Often men, and especially Black men, are looked to as the feelingless gender. How often do you take the time to express or reflect on your emotions? Or do you even? Stop being afraid to share your emotions. Paying attention to your emotions helps you to become more in tune with your triggers and actions and allows you to think critically. Rather you're going to be wrong, right, or confused; find that person or person(s) you feel most comfortable with, and talk it out. Letting emotions build up will only lead to unneeded stress. 2. Work it out. Yes, do exercise. Rather it’s through a sport, joining a local gym, running, or weightlifting, find the time and workouts that best fit your lifestyle. Starting to exercise means starting good habits. Exercising creates a more health-conscious, self-aware you. Whether you want to bulk up, lean down, add strength, or just maintain, try to exercise about 4-5 days per week. Consistency is key. Finding a friend to workout If you’re not sure where to start, I suggest exploring YouTube videos, reading some blogs, and researching different workout techniques and routines to give you a framework. 3. Stay a cut above. Rather you rock it short, long, shaved, waves, dreads, nappy, curly, or any other hair style, keeping a line up is a must these days. Your hair is an extension of your style and character. From the classic taper fade to long eccentric locks, find a style that fits you. A barbershop is often the place to get right, talk about what’s happening in the world, hear some new music, and crack a few jokes. Find a quality barber that will respect your hairline boundaries and don’t limit yourself to trying something new and edgy with your hair. 4. Read. When is the last time you read a book? If you’re only reading the required text for class, you might be missing out on some important knowledge and mental stimulation. Reading is a jump start to self exploration. Through reading, you are expanding on your vocabulary, exposing yourself to new things, building stronger analytical skills, and gaining a better understanding of the culture. A black man critically thinking and structuring new creative ideas is a threat of excellence. Grab a book and Knowledge can never be taken from you. 5. Turn it up. Take some time out of your daily routine to turn up the music and vibe out to your favorite album. Whatever type of music you enjoy, make sure it makes you feel good and uplifts you. One of the many values of music’s influence is being able to make connections. Connect with the lyrics by relating them to your own lifestyle or seeing the differences in someone else's. Focus on the words and analyze the messages playing through your headphones. The power of music can leave you feeling refreshed, take you back to your younger days, or put you in the zone to plan for the future. Self care is necessary for your greatness. Love yourself & stay focused. |
