What advice do you have for networking throughout the holidays?
What goals are you finishing up in 2015? What are preparing for in 2016?
I’ve been writing a book of poem/prose dedicated to the darker daughter for quite some time. I pray that by the end of 2015 that it will be close to completion. It’s been a long time coming but if there’s one thing that the creative process has taught me it’s this: Do not rush the art! It develops in its own time. It’s imperative that I give this masterpiece the level of detail that it deserves. I’m writing to change the narrative of how dark skinned girls perceive themselves and how society values them. I’m writing to leave an indelible mark on the dark girl who will inhabit this earth centuries from now.
My major focus in 2016 is to close on my next investment property. I’m all about ownership! I look at the properties that I’m acquiring now as preparation for what’s to come. One of my ultimate goals in life is to create communities that foster relationships which are conducive to both creative thinkers and business minds.
What lessons did you take away from Kobe's retirement announcement? What do you hope to accomplish throughout your own career?
Lesson 1: Hustle as if tomorrow doesn’t exist because you never know when the game is going to retire you.
Lesson 2: If you want to be remembered forever, you have to develop a deeper level of discipline and grind like Kobe.
I hope my professional career allows for black men and women to stand on my reputable contribution to corporate America. In my personal career I hope to build a corporation that rivals the companies that I grew up on.
Did you have a Meek Mill moment in the beginning of your career? How did you bounce back? If not, what advice what you give to him?
LOL, the answer is yes – I’ve taken an L before in my career. Luckily for me, I don’t place too much weight on things that are already done. I dissected my L, found out where I went wrong and took corrective actions in order to ensure another L wasn’t taken. Life is a game of adjustments. It doesn’t always happen how you plan it; it happens how God commands it. Challenges will be thrown at you, but champions persevere regardless of their circumstances.
How do you maintain your social consciousness in the work environment and/or how does it shape your work objectives?
I know this is going to sound a bit barbaric but I choose not to be overtly conscious on current issues, or to watch the news; I choose not to read too much about it either. Why? Because my happiness matters most to me. Don’t get me wrong, I used to be totally immersed in current events but I realized that it’s the same episode. Every time I turn on the news, a black man is the victim of police brutality, there’s a mass shooting, or it’s about an on-going war in the Middle East. I rather not know more about what I already know. I gather the general issues at a high level instead of getting too deep into the weeds. I now channel my energy into creating resolutions that are long lasting and bring hope into the world. At a point in time, being socially conscious meant being counterproductive because it played on my fears and left my dreams in a state of paralysis. I need my mind to be as focused as possible in order to bring good into this world. I choose to focus on love and let my art and business endeavors bring about long term solutions to ongoing social epidemics.
